CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

Police are looking into vandalism and theft at a local veterans facility.

It happened at the largest AMVETS Post in Iowa -- Post 49 in Cedar Falls.

"That's not even funny. I mean who would break into a veterans organization -- for what?" said Denny Koehn, AMVETS Post 49.

Koehn got the call from the custodian at the post Monday morning.

"And then I found out the horrible truth of what actually happened," said Koehn.

Someone broke into the building through a back window.

"He first went to the box where you renew your dues at, smashed that, and took the money that was in there," Koehn said.

That person then broke through the locked office door. They tried to break into the safe, and then spent some time breaking into the ATM. They then spent an hour and a half inside this building.

It's unclear how much money the thief stole, but veterans say that's not the point.

"To be honest with you, my thought was, 'How could somebody stoop to so low of a thing to break into a veterans organization?'" Koehn said. "I mean, we're here just to help vets out. That's all we're here for."

They do have surveillance video of the person who did this.

Cedar Falls Police are investigating and didn't want to release that to KWWL Tuesday.

The AMVETS also have an alarm system set up, but it didn't work Sunday night.
