Clarksville football gets jump on 2015 season

CLARKSVILLE (KWWL) -

The 2015 season comes 7 days early for the Clarksville football team. The Indians are one of several 8-Man teams that open the season with a week zero match-up a week from Friday.

The Indians are looking to improve on a 7 win campaign from last year that ended with a first round loss in the playoff.

With inexperience at spots, they'll have to grow up fast. Clarksville lost quarterback and second leading rusher Trevor Fenneman to graduation. Fenneman had been a 4-time all-district selection.

The Indians return leading rusher Zach Sommerfelt, who was also an all-district selection at linebacker along with fellow senior James Schellhorn. Both believe the team can improve from last year.

"I think that we'll be alright. We've got a lot of kids coming up that are knowledgeable and they'll be pretty good," said Schellhorn.

"We've got a lot of young kids that are learning a lot really fast," agreed Sommerfelt, "We lost a lot last year, but we've got a pretty decent team this year."

Third year head coach Chris Arians says the key is just to get all of his team on the same page in the early practices,

"The first two weeks is just learn our stuff, perfect what we can do," said Arians, "Then that week 3, that's when we start to do a little more of the game planning and specify here for that first week zero game."

Clarksville opens at Colo-Nesco on August 21.
