Waverly-Shell Rock set for 2015 campaign with new QB

Posted: Updated:

Changes are in store this football season for the Waverly-Shell Rock Go-Hawks. For the first time in 3 years, WSR will have a new quarterback under center replacing long-time starter Jake Velky. Just who that is will be determined in the next couple weeks according to head coach Mark Hubbard.

The new signal caller will have some experienced support, however, behind him in the backfield. Running backs Riley Steckelberg and Ryan Sprain return to the line-up after a season that saw the pair combine for more than 1,400 yards on the ground along with 17 touchdowns

"Obviously we graduated a great group of seniors and hopefully we're saying that every year," said Hubbard, "That's kind of what we're striving for every year, so we always graduate a great group, and at this time of year we're always wondering who's going to step up in to those places. Traditionally we've always had kids step up, and I look for that to be the same this year."

The Go-Hawks, who will be looking to improve on 2014's 8-win effort, will open up at home against Waterloo West on August 28.
