Construction underway on Dike youth sports complex

DIKE (KWWL) -

The Kruger-Hemmen Sports Complex is beginning to take shape along highway 20. The project, estimated at just under $1 million will feature 4 baseball/softball fields, 5 soccer fields, and multiple youth football fields. The idea for the complex came out of a need for more facilities to accommodate a growing program in Dike.

“We have 200 kids in our athletic program so we don't have enough field space,” said Justin Stockdale, president of Dike's Fields 2 Fields organization, “We've got one baseball field, and so the need was pretty evident and hence the support of where we're at today.”

Stockdale says that so far more than $600,000 of the projects cost has been secured. The organization recently announced a $50,000 donation matching challenge.

In the early stages of the development, Dike resident Dennis Kruger sold the land to the city of Dike, then donated $200,000 dollars back to the project. Community member Kevin Hemmen added another $200,000 dollar donation to help get the project started.

“The response has been fantastic and we hope that continues,” said Stockdale.

Bob Hellman's Build Our Ballparks organization has also offered assistance.

The baseball and softball fields are slated to be seeded in the coming weeks and are scheduled to open in the spring. The soccer and football fields will already be used this fall.
