A man loses more than his wallet

Posted: Updated:

Chuck Smith and his grandson spend every Thursday together.

"Well I've been taking Bryce, Sarah's son Bryce, to what we call "Papa Day" on Thursday afternoons, so we go do something, so swimming is one of his favorite things to do," Chuck told us.

Chuck was swimming at the North Liberty Community Center with his grandson, when his wallet was taken.

Inside the wallet was a piece of paper he carried for 41 years, with a phone number from his future wife, from the day they met.

"Sad, you know just that this thing I treasured so much, that represented my relationship with my wife for these last 41 years, is gone and irreplaceable," Chuck said.

The note was not the only important thing taken.

"I also carried the receipts for our wedding bands, in together with that, and on occasion I'd pull that out and tell my kids or friends a story about that," said Chuck.

The wallet was also a gift in itself, hand made by Chuck's brother-in-law.

Chuck's daughter, Sarah, posted on Facebook to try and track it down.

"I was just blown away by it, and I thought maybe just maybe if I reach out through social media that this could get some attention somehow," said Sarah.

It's working so far, the post has over 2800 shares.

The family is hoping the wallet can be returned to their body shop in Iowa City, and put into the drop box.

"I'm hoping the best outcome is, the person does see this and they will do the right thing and return the wallet with those sentimental items in it," said Sarah.

Chuck Smith Body Shop is located at 1216 Gilbert Court in Iowa City.
