UPDATE: 6-year-old drowning victim daughter of day care owner

Posted: Updated:

A 6-year-old girl who apparently drowned during a day care outing at the beach was the daughter of the day care owner.

Authorities identify the girl as Alaina Joy Hauskins, found unresponsive at Lake Macbride on Thursday afternoon.

She was pronounced dead at the scene by a University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics AirCare physician.

Authorities say the child was at the beach on a field trip with 25 other children from Kids Kampus Learning Center in Cedar Rapids.

"Lainee" was the daughter of the Cedar Rapids day care's owner, Shawn Hauskins, according to Kids Kampus co-director Debbie Koopman.

"This is a horrible tragedy," said Koopman. "This was a day made for joy, and it turned into pain."

Emergency responders were called to Lake Macbride beach just before 2:15 p.m. Thursday for a possible drowning.

Sgt. Brad Kunkel with the Johnson County Sheriff's Office said Lainee was taken to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Kunkel said the girl was found in the water by a group of high school students also swimming in the lake. CPR was administered.

"There were plenty of adults there, and parents too -- we were split up in groups. Plenty of supervision," Koopman said. "All the parents at our daycare say the same thing -- we put safety first."

Koopman said counselors will be brought in to help the other children deal with Lainee's death.

"We had a discussion (Friday) morning about Lainee's death with all the kids," Koopman said. "They took it well. They opened up. Kids bounce back faster than adults."

Lake Macbride State Park is near Solon.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office and the Johnson County Medical Examiner are investigating, according to Kunkel. Foul play is not suspected.

An autopsy is being performed at UIHC.
