The law enforcement community is mourning the loss of one of its own this morning.

Black Hawk County Sheriff's Deputy Tim Petersen was killed in a crash on Tuesday in Waterloo.

Sheriff Tony Thompson says Petersen was off duty at the time.

Sheriff Thompson says the crash itself is being investigated by the Waterloo Police Department.

The Waterloo Police crash report says it happened in front of Best Buy on Crossroads Boulevard.

Witnesses say an SUV rolled through a stop sign before colliding with Petersen's motorcycle.

The driver of the SUV, 30-year-old Shawna Flippo of Waterloo, told police she did not see the motorcycle.

Flippo was ticketed for failing to obey a stop sign and driving with a suspended license.

The crash report indicates Deputy Petersen was taken to the hospital with broken ribs and a laceration to his liver. Police say he later died from internal injuries.

Deputy Petersen was 34 years old.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, at Prairie Lakes Church in Cedar Falls, according to Sheriff Thompson.
