Police end search near woods; armed man still not found

UPDATE: Police are no longer blocking off an area near Newell and Idaho Streets in Waterloo, as officers spent more than an hour Tuesday morning searching the area for a man they believe is armed.

According to Waterloo Police, the initial search began around 11 p.m. Tuesday. Police say they took a call reporting a homeless man was in the area with mental health issues who had a gun. The caller told police the man fired shots into the wooded area near Newell and Idaho.

Police, however, say they found no evidence of shots fired in the area and have not been able to confirm the man's identity.

Police say the Iowa State Patrol was called to assist in the search from the air, to locate the man as soon as possible.

At this point, police tell KWWL they have yet to find the man.

Waterloo Police have blocked off an area near Newell and Idaho Streets and say they are searching a wooded area nearby.

Police say officers are looking for a man they believe is armed, on a weapons violation.

Police say there is no threat to the public.

KWWL has a crew on scene, and reports several patrol cars and also a helicopter circling above the area.
