Cedar Falls boy hit by car gets new bike from stranger

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

It's a miracle 9-year-old Cody Hall is riding a bike, and it's equally astonishing he even has one to ride on.

It's all thanks to Good Samaritan Zach Hardy, who witnessed Cody in an accident.

Cody's old bike is now mangled, and Saturday is the last day the two spent together.

Cody was on a bike ride with his mother's boyfriend at a Cedar Falls intersection when Cody was struck by a van.

"He rolled over a few times," said Cody's mother's boyfriend, Nick Chapin.

A terrifying situation for all involved -- and perhaps it was the adrenaline rush, but Zach Hardy felt it was his time to do something.

"I kind of swerved my truck over into the right lane to block traffic from not hitting him again, but miraculously he got up and sprinted to the side of the street," said Hardy.

Their relationship didn't end at the side of the road.

Hardy followed Cody to the hospital to make sure he was OK.

Fortunately, there were no broken bones, just a few scratched and bruises.

The thought of Cody being without a bike was unsettling for Hardy.

"I think at one point he even asked, 'this is free, this is free?'" said Hardy.

With some help from friends, Hardy pooled together enough donations to get Cody a shiny new bike and helmet.

"He doesn't even know Cody but he just wants to see him smile," said Chapin.

"You know as a kid we didn't have a lot growing up, and this just shows good people are out there," said Cody's brother Cameron.

Now Cody has some battle wounds to show off to his friends, and the transportation to get him there.

The person who hit Cody is not facing charges at this time.
