DES MOINES (KWWL) -

Cascade's Trace Hoffman hadn't allowed an earned run all season long. That changed on Thursday as Waterloo Columbus tagged him for 5 runs in a 5-3 win that pushed the Sailors past the top ranked Cougars and in to the 2A championship game.

Cascade opened the scoring in the second inning on an RBI base hit by Kurt Trumm. The score remained 1-0 until the top of the 6th, When Columbus broke out. Francis Hart singled to center scoring a pair of runs, the first earned runs given up by Hoffman all season. Lee Hansen followed with a run scoring base hit to give the Sailors a 3-1 lead going to the bottom half of the inning.

Cascade, however, scored on a bases loaded batter hit by pitch, and got another when Trumm crossed the plate following a wild pitch to tie the score at 3.

Columbus, however, added 2 more in the 7th inning on run scoring hits from Henry Dropps and Hansen to take the lead for good as Luke Farley shut things down, picking up the save pitching a 1-2-3 inning to finish it out.

The Sailors advance to face Clear Lake in the state final on Saturday.
