GUTTENBERG (KWWL) -

The Iowa Department of Natural Resource, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U.S. Coast Guard is trying to find the source of an oil sheen on the Mississippi River near Guttenberg.

Specialists spent several hours Tuesday tracking the sheen up the main channel of the river.

Anyone who sees signs of a spill or a fish kill should call the DNR’s 24-hour environmental emergency number at 515-725-8694.

The DNR has notified downstream drinking water supplies in Davenport, Burlington and Keokuk as a precaution.

DNR has also informed Wisconsin and Illinois agencies.

The U.S. Coast Guard was on scene this week conducting shoreline assessments and were unable to observe any sheen remaining.

DNR environmental specialist Chris Gelner says it appears as though the sheen has been broken down and dissipated.
