Mason City robber believed to be AK-47 Bandit

MASON CITY (KWWL) -

The Federal Bureau of Investigation says it believes the person who robbed a bank in Mason City is a suspect known as the AK-47 Bandit.

The FBI believes the suspect also shot and wounded a police officer in Chino after robbing a bank in 2012, and has also been linked to four other bank robberies and an attempted bank robbery in multiple states.

The Mason City robbery happened at Heartland Community Credit Union Tuesday morning.

The suspect is described as a white male, 5’9” to 6’, medium build, possible blue eyes, 20’s to 40’s, wearing a black ski mask and gloves.

The FBI says the man was armed with an AK-47 with a high capacity drum magazine.

The suspect took an undisclosed amount of money and left the area in a 2007-2009 model black or dark-colored Toyota Camry LE.

It is believed in past robberies suspect has used a dark Nissan Maxima with chrome door handles.

The suspect left behind a suspicious item that was rendered safe by FBI bomb squad personnel and State Fire Marshal.

If you have any information about the robbery or other incidents, contact law enforcement.  The suspect, who has not been captured, should be considered armed and dangerous.

A reward of up to $100,000 is being offered in exchange for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect.
