DES MOINES (KWWL) -

The American Red Cross serving Greater Iowa hosts its first ever Iowa Resiliency Summit today in Des Moines.

The event will focus on making Iowa a more prepared and resilient state, by building at both the community and individual levels. The Red Cross will look at how organizations can work together to ensure Iowans are prepared for, and able to recover from, disasters.

The Red Cross says the focus is on all community groups, not just those that respond to disasters.

Speakers at Wednesday's event include representatives from the National American Red Cross, the State Fire Marshal's Office, Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management, the Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity, as well as others.

The summit takes places from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Fred Maytag II Boy Scout Center in Des Moines.
