Police: Kids found wandering after grandfather got drunk, passed out

Two kids were wandering the streets after police say a their grandfather had too much to drink and passed out while watching his two grandchildren.

52-year-old Henry J. Rempt faces two counts of child endangerment and an public intoxication charge.

“It's sad, I think it's sad and it's very irresponsible,” said Takiyrah Dye, a parent.

Dye says she can't understand how this could happen.

Police say a 4-year-old and 2-year-old were walking by themselves Sunday night after they somehow left the apartment their grandfather were supposed to be watching them.

The kids' mother telling us her children were placed in the care of her father.

Reporter: Are you kind of shaken up about it? Mother: Absolutely. Reporter: Do you know how or why this could have happened? Mother: I don't have a comment.

The mother telling police she didn't know her dad had been drinking.

Police say Rempt was drunk and passed out.

According to the complaint, Rempt had a BAC of .15 percent.

“We all like to have a few cocktails, but it's not what you do, but how,” said Dye. “So maybe he should've waited until he put the kids to bed.”

Coralville Police Chief Berry Bedford says the kids were found a few blocks away after someone called police.

Bedford says the two kids are now with their father.

Rempt he's in jail on a 20,000 cash only bond and an additional 25,000 forefitable bond - meaning the court keeps that money.
