DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Helping teens to balance what they eat, drink and what they do -- that is the goal of Mixify.

Mixify is a multi-year, national program that is working to educate teens on how to balance what they eat and drink with the amount of physical activities they do.

Launched by The Coca-Cola Company, Dr. Pepper Snapple Group and Pepsi Co, this new program aims to aid parents in educating their children on balancing calories, especially those from beverages.

In part of this effort, the Mixify Iowa Tour made a stop in Dubuque tonight at the YMCA/YWCA's Union Park Camp with fun and educational activities for teens and their parents to promote living a balanced lifestyle.

Archery, zip-lining and bean bags were a few of the activities that kids could participate in.

Advice from dietitians, recipe cards, cooking demonstrations and an interactive garden exhibit were also provided by Hy-Vee and Fareway.

This event is part of a larger picture in Iowa to become a healthier state.

Both Mixify and the YMCA are part of the Balance Calories Iowa initiative. Balance Calories Iowa began as a partnership between the Iowa Beverage Association, the Iowa Grocery Industry Association and the Iowa Games in support of Governor Terry Branstad's and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds' efforts to make Iowa the healthiest state in the nation.

Branstad launched both Balance Calories Iowa and Mixify last June. He believes that public-private relationships like the ones made with Balance Calories Iowa and Mixify, will put Iowa on track to becoming a healthier state.

Since Balance Calories Iowa began, it has hosted Mixify events like the one in Dubuque across the state. It will be seen at the Iowa State Fair August 13-15.
