Local family celebrates 100th Family Reunion

Posted: Updated:

You might not have heard of the Brody family, but you may have heard of one of their relatives, Daniel Boone.

The longtime Iowa family says Boone is one of their most famous relatives.

Good food and good company are the center of a 100 year family tradition for the Brody, dating back to 1916.

"To have all theses people here, at the same time and same place," says reunion president, Katie Motsinger, "it's really cool to see all of us together; to see how big our family really is. . .its amazing!"

Almost 200 family members of all ages; some local, some from as far as Washington come together once a year to celebrate the ties of family.

"There is nothing more important than family," says Anna Mae Brody Kelly.

Urbana might be a small dot on the Iowa map, but for the Brody family, it is where it all started. The Brodys have been in Urbana since 1839.

A 176 years later, many of them still live in Eastern Iowa and have been coming to the annual family reunion every year since they were born.

For others, family connections were lost and have only recently been reconnected.

"I feel so welcomed here and so at home, that its just like putting half of my life back together," says Judy Ferguson. "I can look around and I can see that I am related by the way people look and I just feel like a whole person again. Its been wonderful."

It is a tight knit bond that each member will gladly tell you they are proud to be a part of.

One member even wrote the family a theme song to express that pride.

The reunion is a long standing tradition that members firmly believe will continue for many years.
