Young volunteers help rehab Waterloo homes

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds of homes in Eastern Iowa now have a face lift and families have a second chance to live a little better.

More than 400 young volunteers from all over the country coming to town for the Waterloo Home Enhancement project.

"This is our second project for our crew, the first one was painting, I had no idea we'd be fixing a ramp," said Elisa Letts, a young volunteer from Colorado.

Elisa and the rest of the volunteers are fixing homes in Waterloo.

"It's the spirit and the mission of service is what they're here for," said Waterloo Councilman Quentin Hart. "We've been blessed to have young people to come here from Illinois, Ohio, Colorado..."

The dream for the project "From the Heart" started small, now he says it's grown to something bigger and more beautiful than he could ever have imagined.

"When we started out, we only thought maybe three years of work camps,, 100 houses. But some time from then, were now at 314 houses that we've fixed up, and about $2 million of economic impact to our local community as well.

Those are big numbers, and they couldn't be achieved without a little leg work.
