Truck hauling mail catches fire near Des Moines suburb

ANKENY, Iowa (AP) -- Letters and packages went up in smoke when a truck hauling U.S. mail caught fire near the Des Moines suburb of Ankeny.
   
The U.S. Postal Service said in a news release Thursday that the driver wasn't injured in Tuesday's incident along Interstate 35.
   
The mail was headed to a processing and distribution facility in Des Moines. Most of the items were destroyed or severely damaged.
   
The Postal Service says the fire may affect people expecting mail in Ames, Blairsburg, Dow, Ellsworth, Garden City, Gilbert, Jewell, Kamrar, McCallsburg, Nevada, Radcliffe, Randall, Roland and Williams.
   
People concerned that their mail was affected could contact the Postal Service at 1-800-275-8777.
