Grant County teen accidentally shot and killed

GRANT COUNTY, Wis. (KWWL) -

A teenager has died in an accidental shooting.

The Grant County Sheriff's Office says 17-year-old Jared Winkers from rural Cassville died. Investigators say Winkers and his friends were shooting targets at his home on Monday, using long guns and pistols. They believe a gun 19-year-old Dillon Vogt was holding accidentally went off, hitting Winkers.

Grant County Sheriff Nate Dreckman says Winkers was shot in the back with a .22 Magnum.  Winkers was pronounced dead as soon as EMS crews arrived at the scene.

"Even a small caliber gun can take somebody's life," he said.  "It doesn't take much."

Dreckman says this incident is a stark reminder of how important gun safety is.

"Firearm safety is just something that needs to be on the forefront. Number one, if you have in your household if you have kids, because it's such a huge part of our culture here in the Midwest," he said.

They're calling it a tragic accident, but say the case remains an open investigation pending autopsy results and as they continue to review the evidence.

KWWL's Brad Hanson contributed to this report.
