MEMPHIS, Tenn. (KWWL) -

A young man wanted on a warrant out of Iowa City has been shot dead by police in Tennessee. His mother wants to know why.

It happened on Friday night in Memphis.

Police pulled over a car for a broken headlight. Officers say a passenger in the car, Darrius Stewart, had warrants in Iowa and Illinois.

The Iowa City warrant goes back to 2009 when he was a juvenile. He was accused of a sex offense.

On Friday night, police say he attacked the officers after the traffic stop. Video shows Stewart and an officer struggling. Witnesses say this happened right before he was shot.

"If my son, like they say, attacked this officer, why did he not use a taser? There were two officers on the scene," said Mary Stewart, his mother.

The officer involved in the struggle had several cuts and bruises. He's on leave now as police investigate what happened.
