WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Hundreds of kids took part in this year's "Cedar Valley Outdoor Family Fun Day."

The event Sunday at George Wyth State Park featured kayaks, archery, an inflatable slide and minnow races. The first 150 kids also received free fishing poles.

The non-profit group Impact Outdoors and Cedar Valley Walleye Club hosted the event.

They say it's a great opportunity to get kids outside.

"We've given 150 free fishing rods and reels -- that's really our target -- so we're trying to get kids to come out, start enjoying the outdoors, kind of reacquaint some of these kids who haven't been able to do that yet or haven't been able to with the parents that they have," said Brandon Medlin, Impact Outdoors.

Medlin says the event is not only to get kids active, but to educate them on certain outdoor activities.

The event always happens in July.
