Former Waterloo Amateur Champion returns to golf

Posted: Updated:

Brock Mulder is back in his hometown -- the former amateur champion of the Waterloo Open and current pro hadn't been in the field at all the past 3 years --

"I've hit a lot of good golf shots on this golf course, and competed in this tournament a lot of times, but today was a little different."

"Brock Mulder opened up shooting 8 over par on Friday, not exactly remarkable. What is remarkable is the fact that he's even out here on the course at all."

"I was playing in Q school and hit one off the toe and exploded the tendons, they had to do a bunch of stuff to it."

He's describing an injury three years ago that doctors told him would end his golf career forever -- Mulder would walk away from the game he loved -- but 6 months ago after caddying for a friend -- he took a swing for the first time in years --

"He gave me a club and I hit a couple shots -- 'that doesn't hurt.' Kind of turned the volume up a bit, longer clubs. We played 36 holes the next day and it was one of the happiest days of my life."

"and before that you hadn't even attempted to swing or anything?"

"Nothing."

6 months later -- despite struggling in the first round -- Brock Mulder's happy to be back home --

"I still got to walk the fairways with my brother, come back to Irv Warren, and get to experience this whole tournament again because it's one of my favorite tournaments in the world."
