A Waterloo West wrestling coach who previously coached an alleged military base shooter in Tennessee said "nothing" about the suspect's personality in high school led him to believe he would commit the crime he is accused of.

Kevin Emily now coaches at Waterloo West, but previously coached shooting suspect Muhammad Abdulazeez in Tennessee. Abdulazeez was coached by Emily for all four years of high school.

Emily spoke with KWWL's Jessica Hartman about the suspect's personality when both were at Red Bank High School in Red Bank, Tennessee -- right outside of Chattanooga.

"That's what's kind of hard to wrap my head around, is that I never saw this coming -- at all," Emily said. "I never saw a mean streak in him. If anything, we tried to get him to be a little more aggressive on the mat."

The coach said Abdulazeez was very respectful.

"No outbursts," Emily said of Abdulazeez. "He was one of my better-behaved wrestlers, as far as problems. I had to ask him to do things -- he would do them. No backtalk, even when I am pushing them. Some kids kind of buck you a little bit -- he wouldn't do that. He was always polite, very kind and he was humble."

He also said the former wrestler got along with his teammates well, and other students at Red Bank.

"The team was a family, and I never noticed any problems from him or the other teammates, in either direction," Emily said. "Very social, very outgoing. You would see him in the hallway, everything was fine ... I always saw him talking to other students."

He said Abdulazeez had supportive parents who were also friendly and outgoing, calling them a "normal family."

"He was a normal kid -- he was just a normal wrestler," Emily said. "Nothing at any point led me to believe that he was angry or had animosity towards anyone to do something so terrible."
