IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

An upcoming outing is set to help raise money for swim scholarships.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports between 2005 and 2009 an average of 3,500 people drowned annually in the United States  - two of which were children 14 years of age or younger.

The Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department and Parks and Recreation Foundation are hosting the second annual Golf Fundraiser to generate funds for a swim scholarship program.

The program is aimed  to ensure all local kids who want to learn to swim are able to, regardless of their family’s ability to pay for lessons.

The event is Friday, Sept. 11 at Pleasant Valley Golf Course.

Several sponsorship levels are available, ranging from a $100 tee sponsor to a $3,000 title sponsorship. Each level offers different opportunities to market or promote a business, product, or organization. For participating golfers, the cost to play is $60 per person or $200 per foursome, and includes green fees and a box lunch.

There are nearly 3,000 people every year that the city teaches swimming lessons to, but there are still many children who have not had the opportunity to learn these important skills.

Organizers are now seeking sponsors for the event, as well as golfers.
