The National Retail Federation says families are expected to spend less money on back-to-school items this year versus last. The average family with K-12 kids is expected to spend a little more than $630 on supplies including: backpacks, folders, electronics, apparel and other school necessities. This falls about $40 under what they spent last year, according to the federation.
The International Council of Shopping Centers, however, published a study with different results, saying families will spend more this year. Their study says consumers will spend 67% more on school supplies than they did last year.
