New Hartford ready for RAGBRAI

Posted: Updated:

Seven years ago water overtook New Hartford, and all people could do was sit and watch.

Beaver Creek had risen to more than 14 feet, forcing people out of their homes and out of town.

The floods of 2008 came on the heels of a tornado that ripped through New Hartford just week prior.

Fast forward seven years -- RAGBRAI is just a week away.

People in New Hartford are getting ready to host more than 14,000 people.

"It's unbelievable, because we don't know what to actually expect, we're just going by what people at RAGBRAI tell us," said New Hartford mayor John Anderson.

"We got a beer garden that's going to wrap around the building," said Al Abkes, the owner of Beaver Creek Bar & Grill.

Abkes says RAGBRAI is a perfect opportunity to showcase their town, that's why he and his wife are sprucing up their building in preparation.

They want to be remembered for what they have to offer --

"It's a nice small friendly town," said Anderson.
