BREMER COUNTY (KWWL) -

A former eastern Iowa mayor is on trial once again, accused of sexually assaulting a young girl.

Jason Manus was the mayor of Oelwein, but resigned after he was arrested last August.

In May, he faced two counts of sexual assault in Chickasaw County. He was found not guilty on the count involving a 14-year-old girl, but a judge declared a mistrial on the other count.

The Chickasaw County jury came to the judge twice expressing they were deadlocked on the count involving the nine-year-old girl.

Jury selection began Tuesday in Bremer County for the charge of second-degree sexual assault.

Monday the potential jurors were asked a number of questions, including if they have heard about this story in the media or if they had been a victim of sexual abuse.

Opening statements are expected to take place Wednesday morning in Bremer County.
