MANCHESTER (KWWL) -

Amid temperatures in the 90's and heat indices reaching more than 100 in most of eastern Iowa, Delaware County kicked off their annual fair.

Monday is usually a stressful day anyway at the fair.  But add the heat, and it became dangerous for many of the animals.

Eric Zewen has brought two cows to the fair during that oppressive heat.

"It's really dangerous when you take them away from the water," he said. "You just have to really push the water for them -- or you're about out of luck -- and proper ventilation is key."

As for General Manager Jeannie Domeyer, she says the heat is definitely a concern.

"The most important thing we focus on is keeping people and critters hydrated," she said. "We have several air conditioned buildings, so we invite people into those buildings just to get a reprieve."

If you're headed out to the fair, here are a few tips for you to stay cool in the summer heat:

  • Wear light colors and light clothing.
  • Don't be afraid to find shade and take breaks often.
  • Drink plenty of water (and, no, beer doesn't count)

So far, none of the activities during the fair have been canceled because of the weather.

And with more concerts and shows coming up this week, Domeyer is hoping to keep that trend going.
