CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

On Friday, the City of Cedar Rapids will unveil new signs that will identify the boundaries of the city's two historic districts.

The signs recognizing the 2nd & 3rd Avenue Historic District and the Redmond Park-Grande Avenue Historic District will be unveiled at the 2 p.m. ceremony which is being held at the intersection of 18th Street SE and 2nd Avenue SE.

Once the ceremony is complete, the Traffic Engineering Division will mount signs for the Redmond Grande Historic District on the corner of 19th Street SE and Grande Avenue SE.

In the weeks following, 68 street signs and 14 district entryway signs will be installed throughout the two historic districts.

The city says the new signage was funded through a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development grant as part of a flood recovery effort to help mitigate the loss of historic properties.

Local historic districts contain large numbers of historic buildings and resources that reflect the history and character of the community. Special design protections are in place in these districts to maintain the look and feel of the neighborhood.

Both the 2nd & 3rd Avenue Historic District and the Redmond Park-Grande Avenue Historic District are located in the Wellington Heights neighborhood and and contain about 400 properties.
