Boys & Girls Clubs, YMCA warn about potential scam

Posted: Updated:
Two organizations in eastern Iowa are warning people of a potential fundraising scam.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Cedar Valley and the Black Hawk County YMCA are finding out that individuals may be selling items, such as cookies and candy bars, outside local Wal-Mart stores and stating the proceeds benefit the two groups.
The Boys & Girls Clubs and YMCA are making the public aware that they are not involved with this activity, and there's no fundraiser for either of them in which they sell items outside local retail stores. They say a person or group may be using the names of the organizations to mislead people into giving them money.

Local police departments have been notified, as well as the store managers for both the Cedar Falls and Waterloo Wal-Marts.

Anyone with questions regarding the Boys & Girls Clubs fundraising activities should call 319-234-2839. For questions regarding the YMCA, call 319-233-3531.
