CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

The United States Department of Justice has filed a civil complaint on behalf of the Food and Drug Administration against a Cedar Rapids company that makes and distributes a variety of dietary supplements.

The suit claims products made by Iowa Select Herbs LLC are made under conditions where the safety of the products cannot be ensured. They also allege the company unlawfully claims their products can treat or prevent diseases. President and CEO Gordon L. Freeman and Lois A. Dotterweich, a partial owner, are also named in the complaint.

“The Department of Justice is committed to ensuring that dietary supplements are manufactured and distributed in compliance with the law,” Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Mizer said in a written statement.  “We will pursue actions against manufacturers who do not manufacture their products under proper conditions or who make unlawful claims about them.”

The complaint alleges the company repeatedly failed to test dietary ingredients to verify their identity before using them. It also alleges the company claims their products can treat diseases like cancer, malaria and heart disease, but have never submitted those products for FDA approval.
