Cancer doctor gets 45 years

Posted: Updated:

A Michigan doctor accused of treating healthy patients for cancer in order to make millions was sentenced to 45 years in federal prison.

Prosecutors say doctor Farid Fata either over-treated terminal cancer patients, misdiagnosed healthy people or under-treated actual cancer patients.

The family members who say Fata killed their loved ones gathered in Detroit following the sentencing.

They wore pins of those lost, after prosecutors say Fata pumped more than five-hundred patients with unnecessary drugs.

Prosecutors say some were even given chemotherapy drugs they didn't need...all so he could collect millions from insurance companies.

Some victims say the former doctor should have gotten 175 years behind bars, not 45.

"I just want to see justice done. This man, pardon me, killed my husband, and I want to see him put away.  I had hoped it's triple digits. He needs to sit somewhere and think about what he's done to everybody," One woman said.

In court all week -- Fata was described as stone-faced.

But Friday he broke down...letting out loud sobs...begging the court for mercy.

Fata pleaded guilty last year to fraud, money laundering and conspiracy.
