CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

The Fire Department in Cedar Rapids was dispatched to 13 different fire alarms within the course of just 15 minutes on Wednesday afternoon. There weren't any fires, but a drop in water pressure that served as a warning in "water flow alarms" so the alarms sounded.
The City says that Alliant Energy confirmed with the fire department that people were digging near 42nd Street and U.S. Interstate 280, when they hit a power line, causing an outage for 1,400 people.
That power outage meant the water pumps in the city had fluctuating pressure, leading to a water flow alarm.
Normal water pressure eventually returned and water flow alarms were reset in the businesses where alarms had sounded.
Both the Fire Department and Alliant Energy want to remind you to call 811 before you dig, and be cautious when digging near underground electric and natural gas lines.
