Iowa's Schaake set for John Deere Classic

SILVIS, Ill. (KWWL) -

Iowa sophomore Carson Schaake is set to tee it up with the pros. Schaake will compete in this weekend's John Deere Classic after receiving a sponsor's exemption in to the tournament.

The event comes on the heels of a big year for the Hawkeye golfer. Schaake won the individual title in the 2015 Big Ten Tournament, becoming the first Iowa player to do so since 1992.

This week on the practice range and green, Schaake's been watching pro's like U.S. Open and Masters' champion Jordan Spieth to try and pick up new habits.

"Jordan, he was just hitting 15 footers, 10 footers for an hour there, but that's the scoring range, and that's where he's going to make a lot of birdies from," said Schaake, "so, I pick up little tips here and there that help me in my game and help me get ready for the week."

Schaake's entry in to the tournament marks the third straight year a Hawkeye has competed. Steven Ihm received a sponsor's exemption the previous two years.
