DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

It may only be July, but it seems there is a grinch on the loose.

Tom Rauen, owner of Envision Tees in Dubuque, came home from a holiday weekend to find his two 12x18 flags stolen from his building.

He first draped the flags over the side of his building last year for the 4th of July weekend, and it was such a hit, he started hanging them for other holidays, too.

But this time, despite eight 50 pound bags of sand holding them onto the roof, someone pulled the flags down and took them.

"I couldn't believe it," Rauen said.

He says the flags cost about $500 each.  But it's not the money that makes him mad.

"Think about the meaning behind it and why would you steal an American flag? It doesn't make sense to me and a lot of the comments we've gotten on Facebook are like who would do this? And why would they do it?" he asked.

Rauen says he has security cameras, but they only shoot the immediate area in front of his store.  He's also working with the Dubuque Police to check traffic cameras to see when a car might've driven down his road.

"We're not looking to press charges or anything. We hope someone they realizes they made a mistake by doing this and they just return the flags," he said.

He also said he's thinking about adding more security cameras to capture the entirety of the parking lot.

And as for the flags?  He plans to replace them, unless someone brings his back.
