Report: Death in hospital more likely for those admitted on weekends

(NBC) -

Researchers who sifted through information from 28 hospitals in the United States, England, Australia, The Netherlands over the course of 3 years found that people who were admitted to the hospital on the weekend were more likely to die than those admitted during the week.
The study shows that the "weekend effect" wasn't immediate; the likelihood of dying within 30 days was higher for those admitted on weekends.
Experts attribute less staffing and reduced access to test results and diagnostics on the weekend; however, they say more research needs to be done to understand what causes the "weekend effect."
