Canadian smoke in Iowa

Posted: Updated:

If you're smelling smoke Monday night, you're actually smelling wildfires in northern Canada.

A plume of smoke from wildfires in northern Canada has spread over the upper Midwest, and a cold front is pushing that smoke down to ground level as it moves across Iowa on Monday.

That will result in decreased visibility as well as lower air quality, according to the National Weather Service. It will make its way into eastern Iowa Monday evening, according to Storm Track 7 Chief Meteorologist Mark Schnackenberg.

People with breathing difficulties or other health issues, as well as young children and the elderly, should avoid traveling outdoors if possible until the smoke clears.

The smoke will continue throughout the night, and it may get worse before it gets better.
