Extra enforcement on highways this weekend

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

The Fourth of July holiday is typically one of the deadliest weekends of the year on the roadways.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 512 people died in 2013 over the holiday weekend. Data is not yet available for 2014.

39% of those crashes involved a drunk driver. In 20% of cases, intoxicated drivers had a blood alcohol concentration of .15 or higher. The legal limit in most states is .08.

In Iowa, six people died over the 2013 holiday and half the crashes were alcohol related.

In an effort to keep roads safe, police departments and State Troopers across the state have extra officers on the roads this weekend.
