WATERLOO (KWWL) -

A jury has found Zach Church guilty of attacking a Cedar Falls police officer and having drugs.

Church faced charges of assaulting a peace officer with the intent to cause injury, possession of a controlled substance, and operating while under the influence.

Former Cedar Falls police officer Bob Anderson says he found Church asleep in his car, which was parked but still running, early Christmas morning in 2013.

Anderson said he smelled burnt marijuana, and tried to get Church into his squad car.  But Anderson says that's when Church attacked him, hitting him several times.

Anderson said he warned Church to stop several times, and was worried he would lose consciousness.  Anderson then fired his gun, shooting Church three times.

Church had been charged with assaulting a peace officer with intent to cause serious injury - which is a felony.  But the jury found Church guilty on a lesser charge - just a misdemeanor, which carries a max one year sentence.

Church was still found guilty on a felony charge of having drugs, which carries a maximum 5 year sentence.

A sentencing date has not been set.

Zach Church's attorney, Ben Bergmann says he is not sure what course of action they will follow next.
