Practicing good bicycle safety can get you a free ice cream cone

JOHNSON COUNTY (KWWL) -

There's an effort to focus on bicycle safety this summer in Johnson County.

The Johnson County Ambulance Service partnered with Dane's Dairy, Coralville Dairy Queen, Heyn's Ice Cream and McDonald's, that will give free ice cream cone certificates to youth cyclists who are spotted practicing good bicycle safety.

“Part of our mission is to educate the public about emergency medical services, safety and injury prevention,” said paramedic supervisor Dawn Jennings.

Jennings says the ambulance service will be going around area swimming pools to talk with parents and kids about safe bicycling.

“This is a fun way to recognize kids who are following bike safety recommendations, like wearing properly-fitted helmets, having lights on their bike, and obeying traffic laws. It's a great way to start a dialogue, so we can explain why these guidelines are so important. And if a family can't afford a helmet, we can direct them to helpful resources,” said Jennings.
