The suspect in the murder of an international student at Iowa State University has been arrested and charged with intentional homicide.

Xiangnan Li, a former international student at the University of Iowa, was arrested in China.  Iowa City Police Officers say Li was in a relationship with Tong Shao.  Shao was reported missing on September 17, 2014.  Her body was recovered in the trunk of her car on September 26, 2014.

The Iowa City Police Department worked closely with the Criminal Investigation Bureau of China during the investigation.  According to the Criminal Investigation Bureau of China, Li killed Shao on September 7, 2014 and fled the United States to China.

Police of Zhejiang Province in China were assigned to investigate allegations surrounding the murder of Shao. Chinese authorities located Li and on May 13, 2015, Li surrendered himself to the police.

In early June, local and federal law enforcement authorities invited the Criminal Investigation Bureau of China to send a team of investigators to Iowa City to work with authorities in Iowa. After the evidence was presented, the People's Prosecutor of Wenzhou, China, arrested Li for the crime of intentional homicide on June 19, 2015.
