WATERLOO (KWWL) - The Waterloo Police Department is working to improve officers' relationship with the community -- specifically children.

For more than a decade, officers with the department have handed out books to kids they see in town.

It's a partnership with the Quota Club, the police department and Waterloo Schools.

They do it all year long, but during the summer they try to make it a priority. It's an opportunity to keep that positive connection to the community.

"Does this summer make it any different than any other? Not necessarily," said Sgt. Brian Hoelscher. "I think a lot of this stuff is just has been up in front in the media. So as long as we keep doing what we're always doing, I think we'll continue to foster that relationship here in Waterloo."

If you have books you would like to donate to the program, just bring them to the police department.
