WATERLOO (KWWL) -

A Parkersburg man was on trial Thursday after attacking a Cedar Falls police officer.

It happened Christmas morning in 2013. Zach Church faces charges of assault on a peace officer and drug charges.

Cedar Falls officer Bob Anderson used lethal force, shooting Church multiple times.

"I tell Mr. Church, I said, 'Stop, or I will shoot you,'" said Anderson in court Thursday.

According to Anderson, when he tried to get Church into his squad car, Church didn't stop hitting him -- and that's why Anderson shot him three times.

Dash cam video from the incident was shown in court Thursday. It doesn't show the assault and shooting, but you see Church run back to his car and get in after it all happened.

Several minutes later, you then see Church open the door and fall out of the car.

Officer Anderson says Church hit him, dropping him to his knees. Anderson said he shot Church because he was afraid for his life.

"I was afraid I was going to be unconscious, that I was going to go out. I didn't know at this point if I was going to live or die," said Anderson.
