Witnesses: gas station collapse sounded like a lightning bolt

EVANSDALE (KWWL) - UPDATE: A spokesperson for Kwik Star says the original opening date of the gas station was slated for September 17th, but now that date will be pushed back.

Two construction workers are recovering after the roof of a gas station collapsed mid construction.

It happened at a Kwik Star being built on Gilbert Drive and River Forest Road in Evansdale.

Police say the workers suffered non-life threatening injuries, and are expected to be okay.

According to officials, the workers were working on the trusses when something happened and the roof began to fall.

Linda Ambrose works at a gas station across the street.

"I was waiting on a customer and I heard a crackle, and I looked over and I saw the whole top fall down. All I saw was yellow shirts under there. It was probably the most horrifying thing I've ever watched," said Ambrose.

Bret Kastli works at an auto repair shop nearby.

"The rafters went down one by one, and started crashing over," he said.

They all fell into a giant pile, injuring two in the process.

Officials say it was a good thing scissor lifts were in place and caught the wood, or it could have crushed the 20 or so workers underneath.

"It sounded like a lightning bolt, it was pretty loud," said Kastli.

He says he ran over to see if anyone needed help, and was relieved to see the two injured workers conscious and talking.

But still, it was a major scare for everyone who witnessed it.

"I was horrified, scared to death someone was hurt," said Ambrose.

Evansdale's city building manager said the full reconstruction process will begin Thursday, but they'll have to start with all new wood.

The gas station was slated to open in July.
