DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Storms that hit Eastern Iowa Monday morning definitely left their mark in Dubuque and Clayton counties.

In Holy Cross, straight line winds tore the roof off of La Salle Catholic School.  Principal Susan Hucker said the building was empty at the time.

"We saw the weather reports and decided to work from home today," she said.

The roof took out a power line, knocking out power to most of the town.  Luckily, there was a rubber roof under the roof that tore off, meaning most of the school stayed dry.  Crews were working Monday morning to plug up any minor leaks with tarps and sandbags.

Just south of Millville, Harold Heitman came outside after the storm and found quite a mess.

His carport, which started the day behind his house, is now sitting in front of it, mangled.  His trees took a big hit, and some of the gutters on his house came off.

But he was most upset about the damage to his machine shed, which was basically leveled by the storm.

"I came outside and I just had this sunken feeling in my gut when I saw it," he said.  Pieces of his machine shed had been thrown across the road from his house.

And in Garber, crews are busy cleaning up.  Trees are down almost everywhere you look and a camper was turned on it's side and was sitting under a tree branch.

Garber's Fire Chief said his son's car was totaled after a branch fell on it, and an Amish store near town was leveled.
