WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Police released the name of the 18-month-old child who they say died in the hands of in-home daycare providers in Waterloo.

Brody Harrelson died in a car seat provided by the daycare providers, according to police.

Reports indicate he died from asphyxiation.

Doctors say accidental car seats deaths are fairly common.

"We would always encourage babies and toddlers to be sleeping in a bed, the car seat is not in the proper position," said Dr. Timothy Horrigan, a pediatrician with Allen Hospitals.

Police confirmed Harrelson was incorrectly placed into the car seat.

Horrigan says toddlers sleeping in a car seat can lead to asphyxiation.

"Car seat asphyxiation is most of the time due to where the strap lays across the baby, they can struggle because it'll restrain their neck or hold their chest too tightly," said Horrigan.

He says it unfortunately happens far too often, and a surprising number off accidental deaths is a result of car seats.
