CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) - The Eastern Iowa Airport usually buzzes with passengers heading to where they need to be. But early Wednesday morning, that was put to a halt.

"OnStar alerted airport police that a suspect had called in a bomb threat," said Don Swanson, Eastern Iowa Airport director of finance and administration.

A 47-year-old man called OnStar, telling the in-car security system he had a bomb and was going to blow up the airport.

OnStar then alerted the police and airport.

"It was swept for bombs on the interior and exterior of the terminal building, and Cedar Rapids Police Department bomb squad assisted with that," said Swanson.

The man, seen at the airport terminal, was later caught near Highway 30. No bombs were found and the threat turned out to be false.

"The Cedar Rapids Police Department and airport police responded appropriately, and we're quite proud of the response and efficiency and the manner it was handled," said Swanson.

Officers took the man in custody and he was taken to a local hospital to be evaluated.

The suspect's name is not being released until he is officially charged.
