IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Iowa City is taking aim at electronic cigarettes. At Tuesday's meeting the city council will consider banning e-cigs from public places.

Under the Smokefree Air Act it's illegal to smoke in many public places but the state law doesn't cover e-cigs.

The city council wants to ban e-cigs from all areas where smoking is banned: workplaces, city buildings, even the Ped Mall and parts of parks.

Starting with the fall semester, the University of Iowa is going tobacco free. E-cigs and chewing tobacco will be banned on campus.

The policy takes effect August 24th.
