Iowa High School football playoff field reduced from 32 teams to 16

Posted: Updated:
The Iowa High School Athletic Association is reducing the number of teams that qualify for the  state football playoffs in each class from 32 to 16 starting in 2016.

The association says the change follows a comprehensive review of the 32-team system, which allowed for less rest and recovery between games.

Director Alan Beste says the new format will give teams a week between playoff games.

Beste says the driving force behind the decision is player safety.  The IHSAA says that next season's schedule won't change which will remain at 32 playoff teams.
