CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Mercy Medical Center is hosting a donor registry drive to help find a matching donor for Tom Walsh, 53, and others in need of a bone marrow transplant.

Tom Walsh suffers from Myelofibrosis, and has been fighting a bone marrow disease for the past 25 years; to survive, he needs a bone marrow transplant, but before that he needs a matched donor.

Currently there are at least five Iowans, including one child, who don't have a matched donor in the registry. At any one time there are more than 35 Iowans searching through the Be The Match Registry® to try and find a matched donor.

The drive to try and find matches for those in need will be on Wednesday, Jun 24 from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Hallagan Education Center in Cedar Rapids.

The registry process is fairly simple, and requires some paperwork and a cheek swab; those between 18 and 44 can join the registry.

Because patients are more likely to match with someone from their race or ethnicity, people of diverse racial and ethnic heritage are especially encouraged to help build the registry.
